This thing was connected to nothing - just bolted into the dash and that's it. Which wire goes where? Which wire goes where and how is it connected? I think I found the answer Ah that's right -- I've the newer cluster with turn signal indicators so it's a bit different. I also didn't use the amp and oil lights as I've gauges for those.

The 66 V6 stock had the Motorola The oil light will have one wore going to the IGN switch that comes hot in the "ON" position only and the other will go to the sender on the oil pump. HTH Walt.

The following wiring diagram files are for year Jeep CJ.There are so many more little whizbangs and doodads than in the early flat fender Jeeps. The most common issue I have encountered has to do with the temperature and fuel gauges.
Jeep CJ5, CJ7, CJ8 Gauges 1972-1986
Working on a current CJ7 project I finished the wiring and found that both the fuel and temperature gauge were pegging all the way to Full and Hot. This can happen on the old gauges when a resistor blows out and it can fry the gauges. Obviously something was wrong and to save some time I asked the customer to just order a whole new speedometer cluster.
That was a bad idea…. When I came back from visiting family for Thanksgiving and found the gauge was installed I was all excited that this Jeep could go home.
I did not foresee this turning into the engineering adventure it became. I started the Jeep and took it for a test drive. The dash lights did not work anymore, neither the temperature gauge or fuel gauge registered anything, the brake warning light was dead…. First I pulled the Jeep back into the shop, loosened the dashboard and checked the wiring. The gauge was wired correctly. Having run into other bad after market parts I pulled the gauge to check it.
From what I understand both main parts companies have issues with their gauges so check for shorts before even installing the gauge. First problem I found using my voltmeter was a short in the fuel gauge.
The ignition terminal I showed zero ohms resistance when I connected the other test wire to the case. No resistance means a short. This short that not only blew the gauge fuse, but also fried our new fuel sending unit I had just installed.
I opened the case of the new speedo, removed the fuel gauge, wrapped it in electrical tape, reinstalled it and now the short was gone. The fuse stopped blowing and all lights kept working. Next I reconnected all the wiring, and immediately found that the fuel gauge and temperature gauge pegging all the way to Full and Hot again….

May 28, Joined: Mar 31, Messages: 8. I had bought a used speedometer off ebay that looks identical to the rusted disintegrating one in my CJ5- it shipped from Canada if that makes a difference. I restored the new speedo and went to install it yesterday. The problem is my old speedometer has 3 connection posts coming off the back of the fuel gauge and the new one only has 2- the one for the hookup from the sender and the one that is bridged to the temperature gauge.
I have 3 wires left and no place to connect them I'll have to look again but I think one is power, one is from a cluster bulb and cant recall the third. Here is a pic of the 3 wires on the third post on the fuel gauge of the old speedometer that the new one is missing. Any ideas how to wire it up with one less post?

There are some slight variations with the Jeeps built from ''75, but starting in '76 things remain pretty consistent for 10 years. The meter movement in all the gauges have a built-in dampening mechanism which keeps the needle from bouncing around. The dampening mechanism is basically some thick grease on the movement's pivot points. The reason all the meters are dampened is because the senders do not have a very constant resistance.
If you put a good testing meter on the sender while the motor is running you will see the resistance bounce all over the place. The dampening averages out the reading. This also is why it takes a few seconds for the needles to come up to position instead of snapping to a reading.
When ordering replacement Fuel and Temp gauges for your Speedometer cluster, Stewart Warner brand are considered the best. Imported after-market gauges have these ranges reversed, both are 12v, and have a different wiring and post setup.
Use their instructions and diagrams during replacement. The oil pressure sender is similar to the fuel gauge sender. The mechanical parts are different, but after that it is basically a coil of resistance wire wrapped around a card and the wiper moves across the winding to change the resistance.
The higher the fuel level or engine oil pressure, the lower the resistance. With less resistance, more current flows and the gauge reads higher. The oil pressure sender and fuel sender are both electro-mechanical devices but the temperature sender is not. The temperature sender is a temperature dependent resistor Thermistor. You can see the letters stamped in the insulation material around the posts. A volt meter applied to the A terminal on the Temp gauge should fluctuate plus and minus near 5 volts.
The fuel sending unit wires are located on top of the gas tank where they are hard to get to without dropping the tank. The fuel sending unit should have a pink wire with voltage on the isolated center post. The other black wire on the sending unit with a tab style connector is a ground to the frame.
Make sure it has good contact. To be sure the problem is not the gauge, you can momentarily short the pink wire on the output of the sender to ground, and this should show up as FULL on your gauge. DO NOT hold it for very long in this position.
If the gauge does not move from EMPTY either the wiring has an open circuit no voltage, or no connection to ground or he gauge is bad.Revisiting the Jeep CJ Speedo Disassembly
If it does move, the sending unit is bad. The sending unit can be checked with an ohmmeter to measure the resistance between the round sender post pink wire and ground.
